Design Technology - Healthy Couscous

As part of this topic, Year 5 pupils learnt about seasonality and what is meant by the term seasonal foods.  In addition, they learnt about where different foods come from around the world and how importing fruit and vegetables can have negative effects on the environment.

They also learnt about health and safety in the kitchen, as well as, simple hygiene measures; such as: washing hands and tying hair back.  Furthermore, they used the Eatwell plate to learn about different food groups and how to plan a healthy balanced diet.

Obviously, they had to use cooking preparation techniques such as, chopping, peeling and grating to prepare their own healthy vegetarian couscous salad from ingredients brought in from home.  After taking their couscous salad home and tasting it, pupils completed their evaluation of their salad.

Finally, pupils designed their own appropriate packaging for their salad, including thinking of a name for it and adding the ingredients list.
