British Science Week 2024

British Science Week 2024, which is a ten-day celebration of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, took place from the 8th - 17th March 2024.  This year it is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, hence its theme of ‘Time’.  Time is a great theme as it encompasses so many of the STEM areas from space and how that influences time to recording observations over time in science investigations to our daily lives and what we do with our time.

We were very lucky to have the Science Dome in before the week even started (thanks to the PTA) and Mrs Minter started the week with an assembly.  Each class did at least one activity and enjoyed doing activities different from their daily routine. Foundation Stage looked at seasonal changes and enjoyed watching ducklings hatch (thanks again to the PTA).  Year 1 and Year 4 became weather detectives for the week and enjoyed looking at the patterns in our weather.  Year 2 made jellies with fruits to see if there was a difference in their setting times.  Year 2 and 3 played an interactive game based on metamorphosis and enjoyed hiding the moths around the school to see the effect of camouflaging and adapting.  Year 5 looked at our amazing brains and how we learn and Year 6 made and investigated different timers and clocks (pendulum timers, water clocks and sundials).  Year 6 are also taking part in the Big Plastic Count, which is trying to highlight the plight of plastic pollution.

British Science Week Poster Competition

All children from Years 1-6 took part in the British Science Week poster competition.  The winners for each class were: C1 Archie, C2 Alan, V1 Aurora, V2 Kartik, A3 Luca, A4 Samara, A1 Akul, A2 Oshosomi, V3 Annabel, V4 Jayden, V5 Lily and V6 Mason.  Sadly, only 5 could be chosen to enter the national competition, however, all winners will be presented with a certificate and small prize in assembly.
