Following Our Shadows
As part of our Light topic, the children took part in an exciting shadow investigation. First thing in the morning, they worked with a partner to draw around each other's shadows on the playground. The children then made predictions about what might happen to their shadows at different times throughout the day.
Just before lunch, the children returned to observe their shadows and compare them with their original drawings. They noticed that their shadows had become much smaller and had changed direction. This led to some fantastic discussions about the position of the Sun in the sky and how it affects the size and direction of shadows.
At the end of the school day, the children predicted that their shadows would become longer again and point in a different direction as the Sun moved lower in the sky. They were excited to test their predictions and deepen their understanding of how light creates shadows and how shadows change throughout the day.
