Space Talk!

On Thursday 21st November, Year 5 had a visitor. Mr Andy Mason came on his annual visit to Y5, talking about his hobby - Stargazing.

All of Y5 (and the teachers) were fascinated by all the facts that Andy shared. He talked about our Solar System and what we have found - the planets, asteroid belt, Kuiper Belt and dwarf planets.

He also explained how we are part of the Milky Way (yes it was named after milk - astronomers thought that it looked like spilt milk!) We looked at different stars and their sizes. We looked at different constellations and where they appear in the night sky.

Y5 pupils could then ask questions. These were very interesting:

  • "What are the Northern Lights?"
  • "Will our star, the Sun, die?"
  • "Do other planets have signs of life?"
  • "Why does Jupiter have a storm raging?"
  • and many more
