Blue Kite Trust Year 5 Inter Schools Debate
Each academic year, Year 5 from all the Blue Kite Trust Schools are invited to take part in a debating competition. At Catherine Wayte, we have taken part each year. A small group of pupils work together to find a question which they want to support.
This year, our question is:
Should children be able to read whatever book they want?
Over Term 3 and Term 4, our pupils work on a PowerPoint Presentation which supports their opinions. The group have to decide who will be the presenters (only 2) and then there are a further 2 pupils who will be the chairperson and questioner for another school's presentation.
Each school presents their question and then they are questioned by another school. A chairperson introduces the team, questioner and then asks the audience if they would like to ask any questions. Each team is rated by an impartial obeserver who announces the winner at the end of the night.
At the same time as our heat, there were 3 other heats at others schools within the Blue Kite Schools.
In 2026, Catherine Wayte went to Lethbridge Primary Schoool on Thursday 26th March for the first heat. There were 4 schools debating this evening - Catherine Wayte, Ruskin Junior School, Greenmeadow and Lethbridge Primary Schools.
After an evening of debating, which included use of AI, reading books, creativity and art, and deciding on children's bedtimes, Catherine Wayte was announced as the winners for our heat!
Now we move on to the final on 21st May.
