Greek Day

GREEK DAY!

What A Day!

Year 5 could dress up like a Greek for a day.

During the day, they learnt about how democracy had started in ancient Green times and has influenced democracies around the world. The pupils also learnt how Ancient Greeks voted - especially if they wanted to ostracize somebody from Athens. All the pupils made an ostrakon. They used a piece of clay to create their own broken piece of pottery and then wrote their name in Greek into the clay. Some pupils were not amused when they couldn't find all the letters of their name in the Greek Alphabet.

In the other class, the pupils made Greek bread which does not have yeast as a rising agent but bicarbonate of soda and baking powder. Everyone had a sticky time mixing the ingredients together.

The bread was then tasted (if the pupils wanted to) during a tasting session in the afternoon. All Year 5 pupils had the chance to taste olives, hummus, tzatziki, Feta cheese and honey cake. There were mixed reactions about the different tastes.
