Catherine Wayte

Primary School

30th March

We hope that you are all well and enjoying (?!) your experience of home-schooling! In addition to the learning pack that was sent home in the final week before closure, we thought you might like a few more learning resources to share with your children. We have tried to be mindful of the limits you might have with resources, so nothing requires any printing or access to much other than pen or paper, and the occasional common household object.

Firstly, if you aren't already following the school Twitter feed (@CWPSSwindon) we recommend doing so, as many activities are being shared that way. Whilst you're there, if you follow Mr Shammas (@MrShammas1), you will also receive regular ideas and links to learning resources that are generally most appropriate for 10/11 year olds. He has also set up a YouTube channel (MrShammasTeaches) and is adding reading and writing activities roughly once a week which children can spend quite a while over. He will continue to do this whilst children submit work so that he knows if anyone is using the resources - as we're sure you can appreciate, it takes quite a lot of time to produce and we want to make sure we are providing the most effective resources possible. Please do take a look:

Remember, it would be great to encourage your child to email in any work that they complete to yearsix@catherinewayte.swindon.sch.uk

All of the resources on the YouTube channel so far are centred around werewolves, and if your child is enjoying the theme, they could take a look at the following video:

https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_finkel_can_you_solve_the_secret_werewolf_riddle?language=en#t-202000

This is a maths activity that just requires paper and pencil/scissors - and quite a lot of patience! It took us quite a while, but we got there in the end by experimenting!
Also, attached to this email is another maths activity, this time on ratio. And the theme? Still werewolves, of course! We've attached it as both a Word document and a PDF file as we are aware some people have been having difficulty opening documents from the school email system recently. Hopefully you will be able to open at least one of them!

Then, how about a little spelling/word-level activity? Here is a collection of letters that have been jumbled up. How many words can your child find within it? How about you? Perhaps you can have a little friendly competition! You can only use each letter once in each word that you find (unless it appears in the list more than once, of course!)

r e m n a t d o r f s

There is (at least) one word that uses all of the letters, and we'll let you guess what the theme is.

Finally for this collection of work, an artistic challenge. Draw the best werewolf! We'd love to see your best werewolf pictures. We are happy to receive them (and any other werewolf work!) via email (yearsix@catherinewayte.swindon.sch.uk) or on Twitter (@MrShammas1, perhaps using the hashtag #werewolf)

Hopefully this should keep the kids out of your hair for a little while and release you to work from home without interruption! They could also take a look at the latest issue of Can't Wayte and get involved with that. It's been great to have a few year 6 submissions already - we'd love to have even more for the issue due out on Friday. Thanks to all of you that have already confirmed your interest in leavers' hoodies; if you are interested but have not yet let us know, please do so as soon as possible!

Until next time, take care and stay safe.

Mr Shammas and Mrs Tomlins
